Quinn XCII Releases Brilliant Pop Album, "The Story of Us"

By Andreas Fanos on September 19, 2017

Quinn XCII is a rising pop artist who recently released his debut album, “The Story of Us.”

Now, I do not love pop music, I love rap, although I enjoyed this album and did not mind it at all. I never heard of the artist before listening to the work and was impressed by the unique sound and lyrics equally. “The Story of Us” is full of themes of love and heartbreak.

The work ultimately makes you feel good; however, it is also very relatable. Who has never felt heartbreak? Who has never felt special or loved a significant other before? Although the work goes through emotions of betrayal and sorrow, it also showcases growth and improving in whatever you are doing in life.

Some standout tracks are “Straightjacket,” “Flare Guns,” “Fake Denim,” “Don’t You,” “Walls,” and “One Day At a Time.” My favorite song on the album has to be either “Fake Denim” or “One Day At a Time.” “Walls” follows closely behind, though; it was difficult for me to pick my most favorite song on the album.

The sound of the album is very unique and each song fits into another. The beats sound like a combination of pop, electronic, and even jazz, which makes it different and special, from the jazzy feel on “Walls” to the electronic feel on “Straightjacket” and on “Fake Denim,” to the nice pop beat on “One Day At a Time.”

The work is also very simple to listen too, regardless of what music you like because it is only 37 minutes long with 11 songs. I wanted a little bit more material out of the work, about 10 minutes more or above.

Quinn XCII tries to rap on some songs here, but it does not really work out well for him. I did not like tracks “60 Seconds,” or “Tourist,” at all and thought they did not fit with the overall message of the work. I thought they were not needed. My favorite moments were of the artist singing powerful lyrics. Rapping is not his strong suit, but his unique sound and singing are incredible and off the charts.

Some of his powerful lyrics are heard from the very start intro track. He says on the chorus, “I’m not looking for perfect, just for somebody who holds it down when I’m hurting, lifts me up when I lose.” Everybody feels this way at some point in their life; we are all trying to search for the perfect one, the significant other.

He states more of the same on track “Worst,” where he states, “You’re the worst at showing up two hours late like it’s nothing. You’re the worst, but it’s the best that we’re the worst for each other.” It is basically talking about a failed relationship and sounds like he is telling the girl off, but that it worked out for him in the long scheme of things.

Quinn XCII uses symbolism on song “Flare Guns,” saying, “Flare guns go off in my head, saying not to call you this late. Still I dial those numbers every time. Why do I replay those messages that you left at the tone last May, slowly wishing you were never mine.” He uses symbolism to state flare guns for doing something that we should not do, but do anyways.

Track “Fake Denim” contains some of my favorite lyrics throughout the work. Lines like, “I don’t have a lot, so how could you take the little that I’ve given. Won’t waste another dollar on you, learning my lesson, your money obsession, that’s not my profession.” It really is a song about hitting rock bottom, not having a lot of money or value to your name. It is about learning a lesson and being careful with friends or a lover.

The song “Walls” has other good lyrics like, “All these credit cards judge me on what I spend, I sense you stare. I’m still the same kid you used to know. Behind these walls, you don’t see.” These are some catchy lines I think and some clever ones.

One of the last tracks, “One Day At a Time,” closes the album out on saying goodbye to a lover who is going down a separate path. The chorus is very catchy saying, “Tonight, we’re saying goodbye, chain-smoking cigarettes. We lie, pretend it’s alright. I say you’ll always be mine, don’t know what happens next. We’ll find some way to get by one day at a time.” The artist is saying goodbye, but knows that they will cross paths again and that splitting up is for the best. The lines are very catchy and the beat is on point in this track that has a lot of energy and happiness.

The album is a great debut for the Detroit artist as he continues his rise to fame and fortune. After listening to “The Story of Us,” I can see that the artist truly has talent and that he could very well be the next big pop artist. I enjoyed the work a lot and think that the artist has a lot to offer to the music industry. His debut album is full of the ups and downs of his life with a special sound and powerful lyrics that hit the soul every single time.
